Goals per League: Analysis of Stats

Hi everyone,

We are going to analyse in this post the number of goals scored for the main football leagues from Europe. As stated on previous occasions, this kind of data shouldn’t be used as a strategy itself, but it is very useful to apply it as a filter for future betting systems. Our experience shows that when you build a new betting strategy, you have to look at the big picture. If you are creating a new system based on the number of goals for a period of time or selecting only a range of teams, it’s helpful to have this type of information always available for that purpose.

We separate the analysis into three different parts: goals scored at home, away and overall. We will try to identify if there’s a pattern according to each table.

Eredivisie leads the list with 1.78 goals scored per game at home, at the other end of the scale we find Greece Superleague with 1.36 goals average. If you check the results by Year, Netherlands league is in the top three of every year, and in the first place most of the time.

This table shows the numbers of goals average scored by Away Team for each league. As you can check, the figures are lower here, due to the fact that it’s harder to score away which is reflected in the table.

Most of the leagues repeat on the top of the rankings. In general, that means some leagues are usually more defensive or offensive. An interesting detail is that Scottish leagues are within the six leagues with the highest number of goals scored away, so when you hear that Scottish football is offensive, we can see it is not a myth.

If we display a list with all the goals scored overall, the winner is Eredivise; we can say that Netherlands league has the most offensive play in Europe, with more than 3 goals per match. On the other side of the list, we find Greece Superleague with 2.29 goals per game, and the two leading French leagues close.

That is the situation when you analyse the number of goals scored. As said before, that can be used as a filter or condition for your strategies. Every data counts, never underestimate all the information you have.

In future reports, we will study the correlation between this figures and the type of bets and odds. We will examine that interrelation and of course, we will apply it to some strategies, and, in that way, you can see how to build a strategy with that info, and together, we will verify how profitable those systems are.
